Obvert is an Ontario infrastructure and construction consultancy. We manage delivery for owners of water, transit, road and municipal projects across the GTA, from the business case through to handover.
Services
Most clients start with one of these. Some hand us the whole job.
We sit on the owner's side. Day to day we run the project and hold designers and contractors to what they signed. If a job has already slipped, we come in to recover it.
Contract administration happens on site, so that's where our people work. We review submittals, RFIs and change orders, and coordinate the trades.
We build the schedule, track cost and keep the risk register current. The monthly report is written in plain language for a board or council.
We coordinate the design team and keep the model and the drawing set honest, so what gets issued for construction can actually be built.
A built facility still has to be proven and handed over. We plan commissioning early and run the turnover so operations can take the asset on.
We help owners write and run procurements, and help contractors and consultants respond to them.
Selected projects
Water and municipal infrastructure across Ontario, from source works and pumping to treatment and storage.
These projects were delivered by Thomas Rapley, Obvert's founder and principal engineer, in roles held before Obvert was founded.
A decade-long, three-contract program that expanded a lake-based drinking-water plant to roughly 500 ML/d while it stayed in service, much of it built below grade beneath a public park.
Expanded a 200 ML/d pumping station and replaced its aging electrical, control and instrumentation systems without taking the water-supply facility out of service.
Design of a greenfield two-cell, 40 million litre reservoir and distribution centre founded on more than 250 deep caissons, with the site servicing, stormwater and approvals that came with it.
Replaced valves, flow measurement and controls on six high-capacity raw-water pump discharges, staged around the shutdowns an operating plant could actually allow.
Rehabilitated granular activated carbon filtration infrastructure and modernized chemical storage, dosing and ventilation inside an operating treatment plant.
Took a northern municipality from water-source assessment through environmental assessment and public consultation to detailed design of a new lake intake and low-lift pumping station.
Who we are
Obvert Consulting is an Ontario infrastructure and construction consultancy. We work for owners, alongside contractors and inside consulting teams, mostly on water, wastewater and municipal projects.
To obvert is to turn something so that it faces forward, or to present another side to view. Most of what we get asked to do amounts to that: looking at a project from a side nobody has been looking from, and saying what we see while there is still time to act on it.
Service area
Home turf is the Greater Toronto Area: the City of Toronto plus Peel, York, Durham and Halton regions. That's where most of our projects are, and where we can be on site at short notice.
We also take on work elsewhere in Southern Ontario. For the right project we'll go further, within Ontario or across Canada.
